OHOPE PROBLEM
RUBBISH COLLECTION “NOT WARRANTED” YET That a weekly rubbish collection at Ohope Beach was not >' warranted in the meantime was the decision reached by the Whakatane County Council after investigation. The council decided at its June meeting to advise the Ohope Progress League that in view of the relatively small number of householders to be served and consequent high cost to each it does not consider meantime that an Ohope rubbish collection is warranted. This question arose out of a letter from the Ohope Progress League which stated that people at the beach had difficulty in getting rid of tins and bottles. Rubbish heaps were a breeding ground for vermin. Reporting to the council the Engineer said that collection of rubbish at Ohope would require to be carried out once a week and would entail the services of two men and a truck for a day. A suitable area of land would have to be purchased for a rubbish dump and this would cost up to £2OO after all expenses were paid. A bulldozer would be required from time to time to crush down and cover the rubbish with spoil.
The estimated annual cost of the scheme including interest at 5 per= cent, on the purchase price of the land is £350 and the cost to the individual householder, allowing for 100, would be £3 10s a year.
