Dear Sir.

Letters to the Editor must be clearly written on one side of the paper only and where a nom-de-plume is used the name of the writer must be included for reference purposes. The Editor reserves the right to abridge, amend or withhold any letter or letters.

BOROUGH STREET NAMES Sir, —I have been wondering if it would not be a good thing to suggest that Quay Street, which is the street from Bridgers Ltd’s, furniture factory to the wharf, should be renamed. As I understand the word, a quay is a street along the sea= front, so the name “Quay Street” seems a waste of words. There is a Quay Street in Auckland, but two wrongs don’t make a right. I respectfully suggest that the city fathers of Whakatane might consider renaming the street “Brabant Quay.” That would met with the wishes of all who appreciated the services to the town of the late Mr G. A. Brabant. He was the first Mayor of the Borough. For many years the late Mr Brabant-was the representative of the Northern Steamship Company, so that a street along the waterfront from the old wharf to the present wharf could most appropriately bear his name. While on this subject I wonder if the time has not also arrived to change the name of Domain Road. When it was given that name it was a road along the northern side of the Whakatane Domain. Now the Domain has been nibbled off, piece .by piece, and you cannot see the Domain for the houses. Perhaps someone can suggest some worthy pioneer of the town whose name .might fittingly be perpetuated in this fine borough street. Yours etc., . ADVANCE WHAKATANE.
