HURUNUI APANUI SHIELD
ALTERATION IN RULES VIEWS OF THE DONORS An item in last Friday’s Beacon regarding the altered conditions this season for the annual competition for the Hurunui Apanui Shield was reprinted from another Bay of Plenty newspaper. We have received the following letter from Mr Leo Stewart on behalf of the donors of the shield: “The report in Friday’s Beacon regarding conditions for the Hurunui Apanui Shield is incorrect. “The donors were not consulted fully on the matter. The donors were not even consulted regarding the conditions reported in your paper. The correct version is as follows: The secretary of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union approached me and asked me to call a general meeting next season of all players and supporters to discuss and reach finality regarding conditions for the shield. We were to agree- to the terms and findings of that meeting.
“I regret that the action taken by the Bay of Plenty Union and the secretary’s influence should have been the cause of public dissatisfaction.”
The shield was donated in 1927 and has been competed for on a challenge basis. The present holder is the Opotiki Sub-Union.
