RACING NEWS & VIEWS

Betterman’s Total The eight-year-old Paeroa owned Betterman, is now running the best races of his turf career. At the Auckland Winter Meeting he finished second to Hunting Mac in the Great Northern Hurdles, but at Awapuni he prevailed in the Awapuni Steeples, with £530 to the winner. His total winning stakes now amount to £6202.

A Southern Rider’s Opinion After Surpeen had run second in the Great Northern Steeplechase, of four miles, his rider, A. E. Lord, of Hastings, expressed the opinion that this jumper was very game. This was borne out later when the Survey gelding prevailed in the three miles Winter Steeplechase. A Waikato Purchase Language, a four year old mare by Lang Bian—Scold, has been purchased by Mr G. S. McDonald, of Christchurch, for a Waikato sportsman. She has been showing pace on the tracks, but is not expected to be at her best until next season.

A Double Winner

The Otago jumper, Prize Ring, a double winner at the Northern meeting this month, is now widely in favour for the Grand National Hurdles in August. This season he has won £2583 in stakes.

Lost Art

The South Canterbury trained Lost Art, winner of the Otago Hurdles this month, is making a good name for himself as a jumper, for since he has been put to hurdling his score reads five firsts and a third in six starts. A Quality Importation

Blue Halo, a three year old filly by Blue Peter from Hallow, imported from England by Mr E. A. Rattray of Canterbury, has arrived in the Dominion. She is a beautiful filly and is being much admired by sportsmen who have inspected her. A Distinct Loss

Hazlett’s Invercargill stable suffered a loss last week when one of its most promising jumpers, Geniality, broke a hind leg in the Otago Steeples, and had to be destroyed. Geniality had won at his last three starts over the Invercargill course.
