BOWLING CLUBS CONFER

ANNUAL MEETING BAY OF PLENTY CENTRE PLANS FOR 1947-48 SEASON A successful past season was reviewed at the annual meeting of delegates of the Bay of Plenty centre of the Ncav Zealand Bowling Association held at Whakatane recently. The president, Mr C. L. Luke (Tauranga South) was in the chair and others present were Messrs. W. Johnstone and H. Swinerd (Tauranga South), T. S. Doherty, Deacon and A. E. Peppercorn (Tauranga), P. A. Wall work, A. McMeckin and R. Brownlie (Rotorua), H. Foster and T. Gee (Taneatua), A. N. Davies and H. Cox (Opotiki), G. O. Griffiths and C. R. Borrie (Opotiki Citizens), L. Marcroft and W. H. Pitts (Ngongotaha), J. W. Wilson, C. R. Coates and H. L. Drube (Whakatane) and W. O. Knight, secretary. Apologies were presented on behalf of Messrs. W. A. Knaggs (Rotorua), W. A. Rixon (Taneatua) and the Mount Maunganui Club. Officers for the Season Following the precedent of other years, Mr G. O. Griffiths, of the Opotiki Citizens’ Club was elected president and Mr C. R. Borrie vicepresident. In electing an executive the usual procedure was followed, and the executive will consist of three members from the Opotiki Citizens’ Club and two from the Opotiki Club. Mr W. O. Knight was re-elected secretary-treasurer, and his remuneration was fixed at £2O tax free. Mr H. W. Earp was re-elected auditor.

Annual levies of 1/6, the same as last year, were agreed on. Arrangements for champions and executive fours competitions were left to the executive to decide. Tournament Dates

Applications for club tournaments were made on behalf of the various clubs as follows:

Rotorua for 1 and 2 January, Ist and 3rd weeks in February and three one-day’ tournaments. Tauranga South for 2 and 29 January, Easter Monday and four oneday tournaments. Tauranga for Labour Day 27 October, January 2, March 6, King’s Birthday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Tauranga Combined for second week in February.

Whakatane for the usual Easter Tournament.

Ngongotaha for four one-day Saturday fixtures. Francis Cup Date

Last season the annual tournament for the Francis Cup was held on the Tauranga South Club’s greens.

Next on the roster to conduct this tournament was the Opotiki Citizens’ Club, and this was agreed to.

Regarding the date of the Francis Cup fixture, - Opotiki Citizens’ suggested that it would be better to hold it in the New Year when they might get more entries. The secretary pointed out that there were very few outside teams when the tournament was last held at Opotiki. Several members stated that other clubs had fixtures at the New Year. It was finally decided to leave the choice to the Citizens’ Club. Easter Tournaments The Tauranga and Tauranga South Clubs applied for a combined Easter Tournament in lieu of their respective Easter applications. The meeting decided that all applications as above, with the exception of Easter tournaments for Whakatane and Tauranga, be granted.

Mr Wilson, for Whakatane, stated that his club strongly objected to the Tauranga application for an Easter tournament.

Mr Luke explained that Tauranga had no desire to clash with Whakatane nor deny them that fixture, and the suggestion had been forwarded to Whakatane well in advance of the meeting. The fact was that visitors had asked for it.

Mr Doherty supplemented Mr Luke’s remarks, and said that he felt that no effect would be felt by Whakatane, being so distant, and having regard to the increased number of players. Mr Wall work moved and Mr Drube seconded a motion that Whakatane’s application for Easter be granted. Mr Doherty moved that the application for Tauranga be also granted. This was seconded by Mr Johnstone. On a show of hands, the application of Whakatane was sustained, and that of Tauranga declined. Bowl Testing Regarding the testing of bowls it was stated that the Centre’s application for this had been granted, but the lack of equipment was the obstacle. Mr Wallwork said that .it was testing and not alteration which was required, and he moved that the matter stand over for 12 months. N.Z.B.A. Affairs The report of the Centre’s delegate to hLZ.B.A. was given by the secretary. Mr Wallwork was wholeheartedly supported when he said that the meeting should strenuously oppose any interference with the Rotorua and Tauranga combined tournaments.

The meeting felt that Mr Somervell, the Centre’s delegate, was watching their interests very satisfactorily, and it was decided to reelect him to the position if willing. Grant For Tournaments Mr Cox stated that the Opotiki Club considered that a decrease in the levy to the Centre should be made. Funds were accumulating, and he thought that some clubs felt the burden, particularly when conducting the Francis Cup. Either a reduction, or else a grant should be made to the club conducting the tournament, for improving the greens.

Mr’ Doherty suggested that the grant should be applied for year by year by those requiring the money. Mr Luke said that the grant should be inclusive of green fees generally paid.

It was decided that a sum not exceeding £lO he granted to the club conducting the Francis Cup, if required for improving the greens, the amount to be applied for year by year. Outstanding Trophy Orders Sufficient time having been given in which to cash these orders, it was decided that these be struck off the books as liabilities. Mr Wilson proposed further that each club secretary should obtain a renunciatory note from any holder not desiring to cash his order. This was approved. Trophies For Runner-up

In connection with the champions games, Mr Luke said that provision should be made for the runner-up. The men were on their feet all day and deserved consideration. He suggested £l. The feeling was that an increase all round was desirable, and Mr Wallwork moved and Mr Luke seconded a proposal, that the winner receive £3, and runner-up £2. This was carried.

The suggestion of Mr Gee that a miniature cup suitably engraved to the value be given, had no support. Another proposal agreed to was that of Messrs. Borrie and Cox, that the trophies for the winning executive fours be increased to £1 per player. These amounts are to be the trophy order value. Champion Fours Proposed Mr Cox stated that his club considered that Champion Fo'ura should be played instead of Executive Fours. Mr Davies said that his club would like to meet the best from other clubs. Mr Drube said that that was the original idea of the Francis Cup, but that it did not receive any support. Mr Doherty felt that the Centre should get on to the stanard of the N.Z.B.A. and have champion fours, pairs and singles. The meeting recognised that these games would take up considerable time.

Mr Johnstone agreed with the chairman that the matter should stand over until next year when, after consultation with all clubs, a report might be brought down.

Place For Centre Meeting

A suggestion was made by Mr Doherty that the annual meeting of the Centre should be held each year at Te Puke as being nearest centre to clubs with the greater number of players. He asked that the matter be placed on the agenda for the next meeting. This was agreed to.
