Motor taxation collected over a period of six years to March 31, 1946, was £23,043,567. Of this the amount alocated to the Main Highways Account was £7,824,767, or 33.96 per cent. The amount allocated to boroughs with a population of over 6000 was £684,365', or 2.97 per cent., and the amount retained by the Consolidated Fund was £14,534,435, or 63.07 per cent. Transit Houses The Taumarunui Borough Council’s transit housing scheme, the first block of which has now been occupied, is constructed from army dormitory huts, the living quarters comprising four blocks of three flats. The interiors are lined with wall board and plywood and are well finished. By the provision of a bath, hot water system, electric stove and “hot dogge” heating stove in each flat, the standard of convenience and comfort has been raised above that generally found in transit houses. There is a washhouse for each block may have the use of it two days of three flats so that each family per week.
