RUGBY FOOTBALL

BAY TEAM’S MATCH

DATES OF SHIELD GAMES The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union’s selectors, Messrs. T. Anderson, F. Peebles and G. Farmer, have selected a good, all-round team to meet Poverty Bay at Gisborne tomorrow. Dalamere will captain team and T. Jacobs is vice-captain. The managers will be Messrs. G. Farmer and F. Peebles. The team will leave Whakatane at 4 p.m. today and will return on Sunday. Te Hurunui Apanui Shield It has now been decided to play off the Apanui Shield elimination games on Saturday, July 5. It will be remembered that it had ' been suggested that the system of playing for this Shield should be altered so that it would interfere with club competitions to 'a much less degree. At first this was not acceptable to the donors, but on a re-approach they have agreed to try the system for two seasons.

As a result the eight sub-unions will be matched on July 5. The zoning was done by agreement but the locality of each game was decided by a toss of a coin:— Tauranga v Te Puke at Te Puke. Rangitaiki v Rotorua, at Rotorua. Galatea v Whakatane, at Whakatane. Opotiki v Apanui, at Opotiki. The present holders . (Opotiki) still have the right of a re-challenge should they lose the Shield. Shalfoon Shield The Shalfoon Shield matches will commence on July 5 and in this case the old system will prevail. Rangitaiki are the holders and they will meet Rotorua, at Rangitaiki, on July 5. The games in order will then be: July 19, Tguranga v holders. This challenge will be followed by Opotiki, Whakatane and Te Puke.
