YOUNG FARMERS CLUBS
THORNTON ACTIVITIES The Thornton Young Farmers’ Club recently visited Waimana to play a game of football with the Waimana Y.F.C. The result was a keen game in which no tries were scored, but Thornton secured two penalty goals and Waimana one, the final score being 6—3 in favour of Thornton.
At a recent meeting arrangements were made for a field day on the farm of Mr S. H. G. Jackson, advisory member, who offered members as much tea-tree as they liked to cut and sell for the club finances. The club is aiming to raise another £SO this year for the Y.F.C. national memorial fund. One field day has since been held and two cords of wood was cut and sold. Another day will be held soon. Mr J. Adams has been elected the club’s delegate to the Thornton Hall Committee.
Mr Barwell has been invited to give a lecture at the next monthly meeting.
There is to be a competition for an efficiency badge between members of the Thornton Y.F.C., in the same manner as the Efficiency Shield is competed for by district members. The badge will be awarded to the most improved or efficient member. A suggestion has been made that the club should subscribe to the Country Library service, but a decision was held over until further particulars are known.
The subject debated at the May meeting of the club was “That on fully developed farms on the Rangitaiki Plans area cropping for winter or summer requirements is unnecessary.” The debating teams were M. Law and I. Law for the affirmative, and A. Martin, R. Cleland and F. Broadmore for the negative. The
judges were Messrs. A. H. Adams (senior advisory member) and Jackson (advisory member), and they gave their decision in favour of the affirmative.
Great interest is being taken by Thornton members in debating. The subject debated on June 7 between Thornton and Otakiri clubs was: “That compulsory military training be reintroduced.” In these debates the teams are of three member’s.
Competitions such as these help to gain points for the Efficiency Shield which is now held by the Thornton Club. There is no doubt that this shield will in future be very keenly contested, and debates such as this are doing a lot to maintain interest in the Y.F.C. movement.
