P.W.D. HOUSES

SHOULD THEY PAY RATES? DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL Of interest to all county ratepayers was a discussion at the June meeting of the Opotiki County Council following the reading of an opinion from the Counties’ Association solicitor as to whether the council could levy the hospital rate on capital value. The solicitor expressed the opinion that the rate should have been levied on capital value, and that the wrong system had been adopted for years. The council could revert to the correct procedure of levying the hospital rate on capital value. The chairman, Mr W. A. Gault, said that it would be much the fairer scheme as some houses on Woodlands paid practically nothing. Cr C. Black raised the question of whether the Public Works houses paid rates. The clerk said that he did not think that these houses could be charged rates. Cr Black suggested th. c the matter be raised at a ward meeting. The clerk, Mr M. Stone, stated that he proposed to raise the matter at the Counties Clerks’ Conference.
