PHILATELISTS MEET
BAY OF PLENTY SOCIETY OLD STAMPS ON VIEW Founded a year ago by stampcollecting enthusiasts, the Bay of Plenty Philatelic Society met in the Whakatane Borough Council Chambers recently to celebrate its first birthday. The president, Mr H. O. Garaway, was in the chair and there was a good attendance of members.
Those present were fortunate in having on display part of the excellent stamp collection of Mr Combes, of the Paper Mills. This was shown to members on his behalf by Mr D. M. Campbell, of James Street. All present agreed that it was. the best collection of “full-faced Queens” that it has been their privilege to inspect there being three pages of the stamps. The collection included most of the early issues of New Zealand stamps from the time that stamps were first issued by the colony until the stamps bearing Queen Victoria’s head were replaced by those of King Edward VII early in this century. The Bay of Plenty Society intends to affiliate with the recentlyformed South Auckland Philatelic Association, as a result of which members will be able to keep in touch with other stamp collectors throughout the province. The society has received a letter from Mr Berry, of Wellington, the designer of recent issues of New Zealand stamps, who mentions that he visited Whakatane last year and considered it was one of the most modern and interesting of the provincial towns that he visited.
