WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WAIMANA-NUKUHOU GARDENING CIRCLE The June meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute gardening circle was held at the home of Mrs S. Eagle. The weather being very wintry, not many members were present, but a pleasant time was spent. Mrs King, presided in the absence of Mrs Wylde. Mrs Cooper read an interesting paper on growing seedlings under glass, and illustrations were shown members of the type of glass frames used. Members asked questions and discussed several gardening problems.

A competition arranged by Mrs Eagle, writing down the titles of songs containing names of flowers, in a given time, was won by Mrs King, with Mrs Hampton second. The day’s competitions were won by the following:— Best flower: Mrs King 1, Mrs Hampton 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Cooper 1, Mrs King 2, Mrs Eagle 3.

Decoration for corner in a lemonade bottle: Mrs Cooper 1. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Those present admired the gardens and lawns, which were quite neat and trim. The meeting closed with thanks to Mrs Eagle for the pleasant afternoon and for the use of her home and also Miss Jewiss for acting as judge. Miss Jewiss, who comes from Dannevirke, is at present staying with Mrs M. King, Waimana.

OTAKIRI MEETING VISITORS FROM THORNTON The monthly meeting of the Otakiri Women’s Institute was. held at the hall on June 4, Mrs Peck presiding over a large attendance of members. The meeting opened with the “Ode to Friendship” and the Aspirations were read. Mrs Carr gave a brief report of the annual meeting of the Federation at Opotiki. After the usual monthly business was dealt with Mrs Robb took over the chair, this afteimoon being an exchange programme with Thornton W.I. Then followed a delightful afternoon’s entertainment with the following items: Solo by Mrs F. Stewart, wall competition, Mrs Spence with a humorous sketch, and the Glee Party with two part songs. The monthly competitions were won by the following ladies:— Single flower: Mrs Keir 1, Mrs Carr 2, Mrs Peck 3. Double, flower: Mrs Carr 1, Mrs Sandilands 2, Mrs Cobden 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Cobden 1, Mrs Peck 2, Mrs Lord 3. Shortbread: Mrs Mackrell 1, Mrs O’Sullivan 2, Mrs G. Murray 3. Shoulder spray: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Cristall 2, Mrs Gibson 3. Peg apron: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs W. Mayo 2, Mrs F. Mayo 3.

The afternoon closed with a vote of thanks to Thornton W.I. and the singing of the National Anthem.
