Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. MONDAY, JUNE 16, 1947 SERVING FELLOW CITIZENS FAITHFULLY
JUST how well the ordinary citizen is served in the Whakatane district must be plain to all who read the comprehensive reports of discussions at monthly meetings of these “local parliaments.” Councillors do not rush through their business. They are always ready to take time to discuss everything fully. Borough Council meetings are terminated usually by the final power cut for the day rather than by the desire of councillors to get the meeting over and be off home early. Similarly county councillors find the meeting day all tod brief for considering the problems facing their ratepayers. Such faithful service is given without payment for lost time. Local body members lose much time apart from the day or evening spent at meetings once a month. Their telephones ring frequently, often at somewhat inconvenient hours. There are committee meetings to attend to in between ordinary meetings. Conferences with other local bodies and with ratepayers take up more time. Such occasional happenings as visits of Ministers of the Crown also take them away from homes and firesides. No wonder that, however much criticism there may be of their actions, many .of them have the compliment paid them of being reelected unopposed.
