WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MANAWAHE BRANCH The June meeting of the Manawahe Women’s Institute, presided over by Mrs Bowden, was held in the local hall on Thursday last. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship. Mrs Morice then read the Aspirations. After business was dealt with, Mrs King, gave the dressmaking thread—demonstrating a very neat edging.
Competitions for the day were: — Plain scones: Mrs Drabble 1, Mrs Goldsmith 2.
Jar of berries and foliage for effect: Mrs Goldsmith 1, Mrs Bowden
Best flower: Mrs Logan Snr. 1, Mrs Morice 2.
Best shrub: Mrs Bowden 1, Mrs Reid 2.
A dainty afternoon tea served by Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Thompson brought the afternoon to a close. TANEATUA BRANCH The May meeting of the Taneatua Women’s Institute took place in the hall supper room recently. Mrs Allen presided. A warm welcome was accorded Mrs Armstrong, Federation President, and Mrs Caverhill of Matata W.I. Both these ladies addressed the meeting explaning various matters connected with the institutes, one of the subjects being the requirements of the Corso appeal. Members were asked to bring one cake of toilet soap for Corso to the /June meeting.
A report on the recent Council meeting held at Opotiki was given by Mrs Allen. Mesdames Gardner and Allen were elected delegates to attend the Eisteddfod meeting at Whakatane. Roll Call, “My Most Embarrassing Moment” brought a good response and proved quite amusing.. Golden Thread talk entitled “Women of Holland” was given by Mrs Merrie. Miss C. Doran gave a pianoforte solo “Ave Maria” and Mrs Armstrong sang “An Old Violin.” Both items were warmly applauded
Afternoon tea was served after which Mrs Allen thanked the judges and hostesses also Miss Doran and Mrs Armstrong for their items. Competitions were won as fol-
lows:— Best flower: Mrs Grey 1, Mrs Davies 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Hayward 1, Mrs P. Anderson 2. Sponge roll: Mrs Hayward 1, Mrs Allen 2. Child’s frock: Mrs Tebbutt 1. Drama and Musical Circle An enjoyable evening was held recently at the residence of Mrs McDonald. Humorous recitations were given by Mesdames Bennett and McDonald. These were followed by two play readings “Dresden China” and “The Shadow Passes.” A musical programme was arranged for the next meeting to be held at Mrs Butler’s home. An enjoyable supper was served and after thanking their hostess, members dispersed to their homes.
