MORE PUBLIC BUILDINGS

WHAKATANE’S POST OFFICE Within the next ten years several public buildings are scheduled to be erected in the town of Whakatane in order to keep pace with the growth of the district and the expansion of departmental business.

Speaking to local body represen-, tatives at Tauranga on Friday the Minister of Works said that public buildings must necessarily, at the present time, take second place to the urgent need for housing but the requirements of the district had been ascertained and would be carried out in logical sequence. New offices were required for the Public Trust Office and the State Fire Office at Tauranga.

Whakatane was to have a new Post Office.

Another new post office was proposed for Te Puke. The existing post office at Taneatua was to be altered, and store-garage buildings were proposed for Opotiki and Te Puke.

Also included in the 10-year plan for Whakatane is the erection of a Social Security Office and new Government administrative offices.

Additions to Hospital

The Bay of Plenty Hospital Board at Whakatane proposed an administrative block, a nurses’ home, a boiler house, a children’s ward and bulk store. The Opotiki Hospital Board also proposed a new hospital with all necessary services. Extensions of Government housing were proposed right through the area but particularly at Thames, Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua. Local water supply, drainage and sewerage works were to be undertaken as follows: At Tauranga improvements of water supply and sewerage. At Whakatane new water supply and sewerage. At Rotorua extensions of stormwater and sewerage systems. At Opotiki new sewerage. At Te Puke extension of waterworks. *, Municipal abattoirs for Whakatane, the need for which has been created by the rapid growth of population, were also mentioned as work to be completed in the near future.
