Unusual Catch
The old story of the man who thought he had a fish on his line but found when he pulled it in that he had an old boot is often repeated. But how many have seen this happen in real life? At the wharf on a recent night a young fisherman tugged his line and began pulling it in with great gusto declaring loudly, “I’ve got one!” Other fishermen rushed to the scene to assist in landing the catch. When finally hauled up the “fish” turned out to be an old piece of iron, heavily encrusted with barnacles, around which the disappointed young man’s line was firmly wrapped. When the same person later stated that he had lost half his line to an immense denizen of the sea many and varied conjectures were offered as to the nature of the fish. Opinions such as that he had caught the rest of the engine were coldly received. 1
