What Is A Ruck?
The contention that a distinction should be drawn between a ruck and a loose scrummage was made by Mr A. De Clifton, the lecturer at a meeting of the Wellington Rugby Referees’ Association. Mr De Clifton’s View was that a ruck comprised a struggle for possession of the ball such as often results from a line-out, with the ball held clear of the ground. It was permissible for a player to enter a ruck from his opponents’ side of the ball. Once the ball > went tp the ground, however, the phase of play developed into a loose scrummage and became subject to the laws covering the scrummage.
