Golf Competition
Reference to the Dominion home servicemen’s golf competition was made by the president of the West ern Bay of Plenty branch of the New Zealand Home Servicemen’s Association (Mr J. B. Brown) in his report to the annual meeting in Tauranga. Although not as successful as last year, stated the president, the local members again put up a good performance. They were second in the teams match, with Mr A. E. Stephens being first equal in the individual competition. New Trainer Plane’s Visit The famous Avro Athena trainer aircraft may shortly be seen in New Zealand, as one of the machines may possibly be brought out here for demonstration purposes. Many of these aircraft are being used by the R.A.F. as trainers. It has a wing span of 40 feet, a length of 37 feet 10 inches, and an overall height with the tail down of 12 feet three inches. The cockpit is roomy and provides side-by-side seating for the instructor and pupil, with a third seat behind for a passenger. Pillaging of Table Knives Pillaging which amounted to a clean sweep of articles consigned to a Dunedin firm of importers occurred recently. A case containing 80 dozen stainless steel table knives was brought to the Dominion by the Rangitata and after a long delay at Wellington was transhipped by the Wainui to Dunedin. On the Wainui’s arrival all that could be found of the consignment was empty wrappers, even the case having disappeared. In a subsequent search four dozen knives were found hidden in various parts of the ship, but no trace was found of the remainder of the consignment.
