SCOUT HALL
CONSTRUCTION COMMITTEE APPOINTED McGARVEY’S ROAD SITE A meeting of delegates from Rovers Crew, Citizen’s Scout Committee, Sea Scout Committee, Section Sub-Committee and Girl Guides Committee, was held at the residence of Commissioner C. Kingsley-Smith, on Thursday evening for the purpose of considering the construction in concrete blocks of proposed new Scout hall in McGarvey’s Road, Whakatane.
The Commissioner outlined the original position regarding the section and the proposal to erect a Log Cabin. This had been condemned by Professor Corbin as uneconomic and a further suggestion put forward to build the new hall as a permanent structure to house Scouting and Guiding interests, and to act as headquarters for each movement. The Rover crew had discussed the matter thoroughly and prepared a plan catering for a hall with Roman frontal, and commodious interior, with side-rooms and stage and a Rover’s den in semi-circular form at the rear. The present meeting was called for the purpose of gaining approval to the new scheme and the right to carry it forward. A general discussion followed in which all delegates expressed their agreement an enthusiasm. The section sub-committee, then decided to disband in favour of the creation of a larger and more widely representative group. It was decided that the committee cqmprise, 2 Commissioners, 2 Sea Scout reps, 2 Land Scout reps, 2 Rovers and 2 Guide reps. The following were appointed provisionally: Rovers, Messrs. J. Marsh and R. Herbison; Sea Scouts, Messrs. Francis and Jessop; Land Scouts, Mr and Mrs C. Zinsli; Guides, Mesdames McNaughton and Chadwick; Commissioners Messrs. Matthews and C. Kingsley-Smith.
Chairman: Rover R. Herbison,
Secretary: Rover Colin Dean.
Advisory Committee: Messrs. B. Drube, F. W. Lysaght and B. Johnston and the chairman. The committee shall be known as the ‘Baflen Powell Hall Committee’ and it was decided to assume as a liability, the outlay of £Bl 11s expended in the purchase of the McGarvey Road section, and that the position be discussed in due course. It was reported that approximately £7O was in hand for the building and that an early start would be made in casting the pumice blocks.
