Poroporo attacked but Wairaka imj roved with the game, the forwards playing close and smothering Poroporo’s best efforts. Tai Riini at at last broke clear and sent a linefinder deep into Wairaka’s half. The blues returned again but after an exciting battle on the line Rangikotua relieved and P. Nuku carried clear and was actually unlucky not to score. Wairaka clapped on the pace and some splendid forward work once more had the blues guessifig. ‘
Hard open football ensued all in Poroporo’s quarter. Wairaka exerted great efforts to score and may be considered very unlucky in not doing so before the final whistle. Mr J. Keepa was referee.
WALKOVER VICTORY PAROA 63, P.W.D. 0. A walkover is the only term which describes appropriately the defeat of the P.W.D. team by the first rate Paroa. P.W.D. has the makings of a handy little team, containing as it does some really good players. With more training and a few lessons in cooperation the reds should develop along better lines. It is to be hoped that they profited from Saturday’s game.
During the latter stages of play the game developed into a burlesque. Only a few players on either side took things seriously.
H. Honana, who figured frequently in the scoring throughout took the first 3 points for Paroa, the try being unconverted. Dodd, playing half back, sent a long kick down into the P.W.D. corner and Honana who followed through fast, took possession from a red player and scored between the posts. C. Parr converted. Dodd put in a run from just dver the halfway mark and added another 3 points to the quickly rising score.
From a line out P.W.D. gained possession but their half was run down by the Paroa backs'who carried the ball on. D. Nathan forced and T. Hona converted. Paroa 16, P.W.D. 0. Hohua initiated a passing rush from which T. Kingi gained another 3 points. Hona put a difficult kick over. Paroa 21, P.W.D. 0. From a scrum Paroa took the ball through at their feet and D. Pirini forced in the corner. From another passing rush Kriwana passed to Ratahi who scored between the posts. Hona put the kick over. Paroa 30, P.W.D. 0. P. Knight crossed the line but found a red player between him and the posts. He sent a high throw, reminiscent of American football to Honana who crossed the line and forced between the posts. At this stage the game was beginning to take on the aspect of and a simple kick missed.
From then on the game was hardly worth watching. Hohua made an unopposed run from halfway and Honana converted.
Hohapata scored and Knight converted, bringing the score to 42. Honana took the score to 4|5 and Dodd added three more points. Harawira converted.
A try by P. Ratahi, converted by Harawira, came next then Kriwana scored after a passing rush by the Paroa backs. Paroa 58, P.W.D. 0. The final score added insult to injury, to coin a phrase. Dodd got away and crossed the re!d goal line at a brisk trot. He paused and finding there were no red jerseys in the vicinity leisurely strolled towards the posts and forced the ball. Honana put over a certainty. Paroa 63, P.W.D. 0.
And so ended a game which must be acorded second place only to the Women’s matches seen recently as a burlesque game. Even the seagulls which sat on the Paroa goal posts throughout the game appeared to be very bored with the whole affair. Mr C. Wells was referee.
JUNIORS UNITED 17, PAROA 3 Only one junior game was played at the Domain on Saturday. The play was kept mostly. in Paroa territory and United were undoubtedly the superior side. Scorers for United were Quigg, Henderson, Skelton, Shapley and Dines. The last try was converted by Goodall. The ball hit the post and glanced inside much to the amusement of the spectators. B. Warner scored an unconverted try for Paroa. Mr A. Mitchell was referee.
