Wild Goat Hunting
More than 300 goats were shot by a party of hunters who have just completed a week’s goat shooting in the hill country at the back of Stratford. Three members of the party skinned 180 of the goats, and they expect to obtain'about £45 from the sale of the skins. Goats were plentiful in that part of the country, the same party having killed 950 there in one week about this time last year. The hunters used .22 rifles, and their biggest kill in the recent trip was when they rounded up about 50 goats in one gully. “Farmer Parasites”
“They talk about bringing in parasites from the Cawthron Institute, but the biggest parasites on the West Coast are those farmers who have holdings that are too large and those who neglect their properties,” said Mr J. W. Greenslade at a meeting of the executive of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce. Members said that many farmers milked their cows and then went off to work for the Public Works Department for the day. “They are no good to the industry and no good to the West Coast,” commented one member. Cement Used As Fertiliser
If the fear of the Rangitikei County Council’s engineer is well-found-ed, some farmer somewhere has distributed five tons of cement over his property, believing it to be superphosphate. He told the council that urgent reconstruction work in the Turakina Valley was being held up because five tons of cement intended for the job had been posted missing between Wanganui and Hunterville. It was railed from Wanganui a week ago, but had not reached Hunterville, and so far had not been traced.
