Deer Stalkers in Urewera Country
From Ruatahuna come reports that this roaring season has attracted a record number of stalkers for many years. At present deer are not plentiful but according to the Maoris the deer will come out of the bush within the next week or ten days to feed, when they will again be more plentiful. One party of stalkers with their headquarters up the Waioha'u River have secured some forty skins and several heads. Mr Percy Barker, who has for several seasons stalked in and around that district, secured a remarkable even head of a ten pointer. Another even ten pointer was secured by Mr Gordon Frazer who was for many years on the staff of the Internal Affairs Department dealing with deer eradication and stationed at Ruatahuna. Many stalkers report that the majority of heads are heavily timbered in that area.
