YOUNG FARMERS CLUBS
TRACTOR DEMONSTRATION Taking advantage of an invitation extended to them by the Service Motors Ltd., Opotiki, members of the Waimana Young Farmers’ Club attended a demonstration of a Ford tractor equipped with a Fergusson hydraulic system. The demonstration was held on the property of Mr M. Ellis, a portion of the Glenholm Estate, Nukuhou. It commenced at 10.30 a.m., and a light luncheon was provided by the Services Motors at 12.15. The Fergusson Hydraulic System is a stranger to this country, and although it has been in use for eight years in the United States and Canada, it has only recently appeared in New Zealand.
An area was ploughed demonstrating the ease in which a two-furrow plough was operated by this system, and how easy it was to lift at the end of the furrow. All present drove the tractor, proving for themselves the ease with which is was operated. Later by diagram members were shown a special safety device which lifted the rear wheels when the plough struck an immovable object.
A tray was attached later which was able to be lifted and lowered by the Hydraulic System. From ground level a weight of 9001bs could be lifted.
How the front wheels could be extended to 6ft. was demonstrated and the visitors were* told how the rear wheels could also be extended to 6ft. A drawbar was attached and a set of Reid and Gray discs were pulled over part of the ploughed area.
There- were 53 present including members of the local Young Farmers’ Club. The demonstration was given by Mr Stitt and his assistant and all present enjoyed a very interesting and instructive day.
