WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WHAKATANE BRANCH MAY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute .was held on May 6th in the Methodist. Hall. Mrs Barker presided over a good attendance. The meeting opened with ‘Comrades and Friends’ followed by the Aspirations. After the reading of the minutes, Mrs Barker spoke of the loss to the Institute of one of its members, Mrs Caisley, and all members stood in silence as a mark of respect.
Mrs Neil Martin read a report of the Council meeting held in Opotiki last month, and Mrs Smith gave a short reading from Home and Country about- the A.C.W.W. Associated Country Women of the World—who are holding their meeting in Amstedam and for which Mrs K. Stewart, as one of New Zealand’s five delegates, is leaving in the near future. It was arranged that Mrs Cairns and Mrs Zinsli would collect the boxes for Dr. Barnardo’s Home from; the schools and send them to Headquarters. Junior Institute As soon as suitable arrangements can be made a meeting is to be called for all interested in forming a Junior Institute/ with meetings held in the evenings. Mrs Stewart was presented with a gift to be used on her journey and a shoulder spray. Mrs Barker wished her a pleasant voyage and safe return.
Mrs Stewart in replying said she hoped to bring back quite a lot of interesting facts for members. It was also decided to give Mr§ Stewart a book of Pioneer Tales to give to an Institute in England and so form a link with the Whakatane Institute."
The entertainment was arranged by Mrs Murphy of the Drama Circle. A mime “Call of Spring” was the first, the players being: M6sdam.es Hannah, Murphy, Mussett, Thompson and Kingsley-Smith. 1; The roll call was then heard being followed by a play “Here Lies Matilda,” the players being:.. Mesdames Gardiner Brown, Teasdale, King Jnr., Cairns, Murphy, Litchwark and Sims. Both were ■'•very mjuch enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting brought to a close by singing of the National Anthem. Competition results were as follows: . • ; Apron: Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Patterson Jnr. 2. Chrysanthemums: Mrs Ker 1, Mrs Neil Martin 2. • < Carrots: Mrs Sutcliffe 1, Mrs Sorensen 2. Gardening Circle The April Gardening Circle meeting was held at Mrs Allan Martin’s residence recently. Mrs Fennell presided over a good attendance. Apologies were received from Mrs -Sloane and Mrs Woods. The reading on hardy plants and the kitchen garden was’read by all. Roll Call:. What was thought of Mrs Martin’s garden, brought forth much the same answers, everybody being unanimous in praise of the garden. After afternoon tea was served, Mrs Martin demonstrated arranging of a decorated plate and dish. Around the room were arranged vases and bowls of flowers, but there was homething wrong with each one, and members were asked to. find the mistakes. This was not easy, seeing the arranging of the flowers had been done by an experienced and artistic person. Competitions resulted as follows: Best flower: Mrs Sutcliffe. Best vegetable: Mrs Shaw.
