DECENTRALISATION OF INDUSTRY

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS IN COUNTRY WOMEN WORKERS IN SMALL TOWNS The recent half-yearly Survey of Employment published by the National Employment Service lists 32 towns where the demand for female labour has been relatively light—among those listed are Motueka, Dargaville, Eltham, Dannevirke, Masterton, Gore and Rangiora. This information is essential for the furthering of any decentralisation plans and is of great benefit to manufacturers wishing to set up or extend their business. In Great Britain, where aggregations of population are more extreme plans have been laid for 20 new towns, housing a million people. Population will vary between 30,000 and 60,000 and a wide choice of employment will be available through the establishment of small industries. Though New Zealand has no huge, sprawling cities like London or Glasgow, it .is hoped that by utilising the information and machinery made available by the National Employment Service, country people will have a wider range of employment prospects and many of the bad features of overseas industrial cities will be avoided.
