EASTERN BAY FEDERATION ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING The annual council meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation I of Women’s Institutes was held recently in the St. John’s Hall, Opo-

„ tiki. There were delegates present I from 12 Institutes and a great numI ber of members and visitors. The I singing of the Hymn, -“Jerusalem” I opened the proceedings. The aspirations were read by Mrs Robb and j I the president, Mrs K. Brown, wel- | corned delegates, members and visitors. Apologies were received for absence, and the minutes of the biannual meeting were read and adopted. The balance sheet and re- I port were presented and adopted. The V.O.’s Mrs Withy, Mrs K. Stewart • and Mrs K. Brown, gave their reports, all reporting good progress among all Institutes. The Institutes’ report given by delegates, of the past six months work, were most interesting and outstanding,, all showing good progress and membership j still growing. Election of Officers The election of officers resulted as ] - | I President, Mrs K. Armstrong; I coinmittee, Mesdames R. Smith, F. j Mayo, A. McCallion, Barker, Gard- I iner, Ducker, C. Wylde, R. Withy, Moore and Holland. 1 ,Just before the luncheon ad- I journment, Mrs A. Chisnall, of the J ' Dominion executive, arrived and j was welcomed by Mrs Brown. She I was presented with a shoulder 11 spray of flowers and Mrs Brown, 11 Mrs Mayo (secretary) and Mrs j Stewart were also reeepients of 11 sprays of flowers. I

Several remits that came forward were discussed and voted on. . Mrs Stewart presented results of the recent Eisteddfod. Mrs Chisnall’s Address During the afternoon session, Mrs I Chisnall addressed the meeting givj ing a most interesting and instrucj tive address. The speaker congratuj lated the Institutes on „ their outstanding reports, and said how pleased she was to hear of the successful Eisteddfod held recently j which helped to improve life and living. Members should get to know more members and help each other. Mrs Chisnall answered questions and gave advice" on many problems. I The dividing of the Federation | was discussed, as some Institutes felt that the distance they had to travel to meetings was too great? but -it w'as found there were not enough Institutes for two Federations. Mrs Chisnall’s advice was to form more Institutes. A hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Chisnall was carried by acclama- i tion at the conclusion of her. ad- I dress. Trophies Presented Mrs Chisnall presented the following trophies:- . Rose Bowl, Otakiri Institute (for most points in the Eisteddfod). Silver Fruit Bowl (for best play presented at the Drama Festival), Whakatane.

Silver Fruit Bowl (best actress in the Drama Festival), Mrs K. Stewart, Whakatane. The Potato Shield was won by Thornton. The day’s competitions were: Basket of flowers for effect, six varieties of biscuits from one mixture, soft toy, crochet toilet set and medallion, tray cloth embroidered in colours. • The winning Institute was Waimana with 42 points and Otakiri 2nd with 40 points. Afternoon tea was served by Opotiki and other Institute members, and the National Anthem closed the meeting.

MATATA BRANCH » APRIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Matata Women’s Institute was held in the King’s Theatre on April 23. There was a good attendance of members. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent in competitions and games. Competition winners were as follows: Best vegetable: Mrs Bagley 1 and 2; Mrs Taylor 3. Best flower: Mrs Bagley 1 and 2; Mrs Taylor 3.° Sultana scones: Mrs Magee 1. Bowl of Chrysanthemums: Mrs R."

Withy 1. The afternoon closed with a very dainty afternoon tea. The hostesses were Miss Burt, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Dredge.
