YOUNG MAORI’S DEATH
BUSH FATALITY INQUEST HEARD An enquiry into circumstances .surrounding the death of -a young .Maori, Hector Springbok Reihana, .aged about 25 at Matahina in March was heard before Mr C. S. Armstrong, Coroner, on Wednesday. Jimmy Reihana, brother of the deceased, stated that he, in company with Laurie Raureti and deceased, was working in the paper mills’ bush camp at Matahina at the time -of the tragedy. Deceased was driving a caterpillar tractor along some green pine tops when it appeared to slip downhill. Deceased jumped -clear but the tractor rolled on to him. He was released as soon as possible but was then dead. He added that he thought it wasa pure accident as deceased was an -experienced driver.
Laurence Frederick Raureti, a loader, who was also present, corroborated Reihana’s evidence. The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased died at Matahina, Te Teko, on March 3, death being due to injuries received through being ■ crushed by a tractor.
