PERSONAL

With deep regret we record the death of Mrs C. G. Caisley one of Whakatane’s oldest identities which occurred in the Whakatane Hospital this morning following a brief illness. • <■

Mrs Roseanne Rutherford, Drama Tutor, will be staying at the Whakatane Hotel from Tuesday, May 6, and will be pleased to interview any persons interested in forming drama groups.

The Dominion Chairman of the N.Z. Red Cross Society (Mr A. E. Gibbons) will broadcast this evening on the national link-up at 6.45 p.m., his subject being the National Relief Campaign now commencing. Members throughout the Whakatane district should make a point of hearing this address.

Mrs Kent Stewart, of Whakatane, who has always been prominent in her work in connection with/ Women’s organisations of this district, has received notification of her inclusion as one of the five delegates from the Dominion Federation of Women’s Institutes, to attend the Conference of Associated Countrymen of the World, which will be held at Amsterdam, Holland, from September Bth to 12th, 1947. Our warmest congratulations to Mrs Stewart on her selection.

The Whakatane district is fortunate in obtaining the services of Mrs Rutherford, Drama Tutor, under a scheme of Adult Education and classes have been formed in the various centres. Mrs Rutherford has been working in the Tauranga district where weekly classes are held and then a Drama Festival with the various teams competing was staged. These classes are open to all country people both men and women. A fee of 1/- is charged for each class to defray expenses such as hall hire and advertising. It is anticipated that this tuition will be enthusiastically received in this district.
