ERADICATION OF GORSE

TREE PLANTING PROVES EFFECTIVE SUBSIDY ASKED FOR BY. RANGITIKEI An indication that the Rangitikei Catchment Board’s suggestion to the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council that a subsidy be granted for tree planting as a means of gorse eradication, might result in a remit on those lines to the New Zealand Catchment Board’s Association conference, was- given to the board by the chairman, Mr K. A: Williams. On a recent tour of board’s area by the chairman of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Board, Mr W. L. Newnham, and the council’s engineer, the question of tree planting for gorse eradication as a means of countering erosion was brought forward, said Mr Williams. The visitors were shown one area where gorse had been eradicated in compliance with the Noxious Weeds Act, operated by the Rangitikei County Council, and where erosion resulted. They were later shown another area where tree planting had eradicated the gorse and prevented erosion. “Mr Newnham and the engineer were very impressed and are going to formulate a policy whereby our suggestion could be put into effect,” added Mr Williams.
