OHOPE AFFAIRS

SEALING OF 1-58 ROADWAY

80% PETITION REQUIRED

A further step in the longoverdue sealing and dedication of the beach front roadway fac- ' ing sections 1 to 58 at Ohope has been advanced a further stage after consideration by the County Council and the terms of the Council’s requirements will be communicated to the Ohope Progress League for execution. If the League follows this matter with the same enthusiasm and efficiency it has other undertakings it appears very probable that this very vexed question will be settled at long last.

The Council at its meeting last week decided that it was prepared to dedicate the 1-58 road, Ohope from Section 58 to the Eastern Boundary of the Western Domain, provided—

(1) Eighty per cent, of the property owners in such section of 1-58 road signify by agreement, that they are prepared to give their land on the roadline approved by this committee (to be pegged by the County Engineer) for road; free of cost to the Council,' fence-line also to be shifted back by the property owners concerned to the road-line, free of cost to the Council. (2) That on the line of the-road being indicated on the ground by the County Engineer, and the Ohope Progress League signifying that it is prepared to proceed with the dedication of the road on such line, the Council had agreement in this mater prepared (to be endorsed thereon) so that the Ohope Progress League might circulate such petition for signature.

A letter requesting the Council to institute a regular rubbish collection at the beach was also reecived from the Ohope Progress League. It was stated that to a large number of residents at Ohope it was becoming an increasingly difficult proposition to dispose of household refuse and the League felt that a regular rubbish collection would dispose of any danger from rusty tins, broken bottles etc. and also assist greatly from a health point of view. It was suggested that the collection operate fortnightly for a start and increase as warranted. Each householder to supply his or her own container which would be kept at the roadside on collection day, such day to be at the Council’s pleasure.

After a brief discussion the whole matter was referred to the Finance Committee for consideration and report.
