POST OFFICE APPEAL
PRESENT STAFF SHORTAGE To tide over the present staff shortage in the Post and Telegraph Department, an appeal will soon be made to women who have left the service after serving in a temporary capacity during the war, to rejoin as general division employees. This was stated by the Chief Postmaster at Wellington, Mr E. J. Smith. This decision, he said, would enable many male members of the divisions to receive the promotion that was due to them. The general staff shortage, said Mr Smith, was attributable mainly to the dearth of recruits in the category formerly known as junior messengers. The average youth today, said Mr Smith, was faced with two alternatives—the immediate prospect of high pay in work that would have little impact on his future, or the offer of employment that would .establish him in a worthwhile career. He stressed the fact that directors-general, for many years past, had started in the Department as messengers.
