RUGBY SEASON
GALATEA SUB-UNION SEVEN CLUBS AFFILIATED The annual general meeting of the Galatea Rugby Sub-Union was held in the Rangatahi Native School. Mr K. B. McClellan presided over a good attendance. The secretary reported on the past year’s activity of the club and read a statement of Receipts and Expenditure. The SubUnion’s (financial position is not as good as it could be. The players insurance fund for the past year showed a debit of a few pounds. The club levied an insurance fee of one shilling per player per match and injured players received a maximum of £5 from this fund. The scheme is undoubtedly one to be commended as some small contribution is afforded to those players unlucky enough to receive injury.
The Sub-Union’s share of gate receipts was the major source of income while proceeds of dances helped the club to the extent of some £3O. The major expense was that of Representative teams but considering the distances travelled as well as the assistance afforded clubs whose members were included in these teams the item was not out of proportion to other expenditure. In the forthcoming season the affiliation of seven clubs with the Sub-Union should provide excellent sport throughout the district. The teams will be from the Murupara, Galatea, Te Whaiti, Wairapakau, Kaingaroa, Ruatahuna and Waiohau areas. The Sub-Union opened its seson on Saturday, April 26 with a sevenaside tournament for" the Creamer Memorial Cup. The election of officers was as follows:
Patron, Mr C. Heard; president, Mr K. B. McClellan; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. Bidois, White, Grubb, Kennedy, Beale, Thatcher; secre-tary-treasurer, Mr F. Gibbs; the president, secretary, Mr Goldsmith and Mr W. Paton comprise the executive officers; delegates to the Union, Messrs. Bidois and Goldsmith; selectors, Messrs. Goldsmith, Young, Ellis. Galatea Club Meeting . The election of officers of the Galatea Football Club are as follows Patron, Mr K. P. Dhangee; president, Mr D. Sutherland; secretary, Mr B. Yaeger; coaches, Messrs. Paton, Young and Heard.
The past season saw this club as runners-up in the competition and present indications are that they will again give a good account of themselves this year. The club is also fortunate in having some young players who this year will give a good showing in both club matches and also possibly in Representative matches. On Saturday they played a friendly match against a Murupara team. The ground was not the best and both teams gave a good showing—even if too eager at times. Those who really were outstanding among the Galatea players were D. Wilson, M. Cawte, T. Hickey, B. Payne and M. Wihare. These players with concentration, coaching and training will go a long way in the club’s football and although some of them are not quite up to Representative standard last season they should be among the top players this season.
