FALSE PRETENCES

YOUNG MAORI SENTENCED

"VAGRANT TYPE" Described by Sergeant Farrell as a vagrant type of Maori, Jimmy Pinekera of Te Teko, aged 21, was convicted and sentenced to two weeks in the Whakatane Gaol in the Police Court on Tuesday. Messrs L. H. Brown and S. S. Shapley, Justices of the Peace, were on the bench.* A plea of guilty was entered.

Sergeant Farrell stated that Pinekera had hired a taxi to take him from Thornton to Te Teko and when asked for the fare, 15/6, said he had no money. He appeared to have no intention of paying. He was a vagrant type of Maori and had served a term of two months in Mount Eden Gaol in 1946 for assault. He was then convicted and sentenced as above.

"SACRED DAY OF ANZAC"

"Sacred Day of Anzac, Of memories—forever dear, Trysting place of loving hearts, Of yesterdays—drawn near; Of long-remembered faces, Dimly thru the Veil of Time; Voices in the far-off distance, Cherished memories sublime.

"Hallowed soil of Anzac, Bridgehead of valor, unsurpassed," May the plots wherein they lie, Be ever spared from war's redblast! May the sacrifice they made, Outlast the bitterness of tears; The Sacred Flame of Anzac, light The future's pathway down the years!

"Roll on, Ye drums of memory! Blow, Ye bugles, blow! Then pause-r—if Ye would hear them Answer from the long ago! "We are the Sons of Anzac, Who died in Freedom's name, We sought not fame nor glory In the playing of the game; Nor did we vision monuments To glorify our memory; We died—that you might live In a world, forever free! From out the past we send to you A Challenge and a Call! Build a Brotherhood of Nations! A better world for all!"

"Remembered Sons of Anzac You have not died in vain! Upon the Altar of your Sacrifice, * Peace will shine again! We who struggle 'gainst the tempest In memory see the light that shone; The Sacred Flame of Anzac, Burns on—and on—and on!" William Richard Whiteside, April 3, 1947.
