WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT OTAKIRI The March meeting and annual meeting of the Otakiri Women’s Institute was held with a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship, the Aspirations were •read, the minutes were read and adopted and final arrangements for the Eistedfod were completde. Mrs W. Murray read a very interesting letter from Mrs Guy Turnbull, telling of her life in England. The competitions for the month were:— Single Flower: Mrs Jessup 1, Mrs Lord 2, Mrs Armstrong 3. Double Flower: Mrs Armstrong 1, Miss J. Murray 2, Mrs Lord 3. Vegetable: Mrs Gilbert 1, Mrs Cobden 2. Table Decoration: Mrs Armstrong 1, Mrs Mackrell 2, Mrs Peck 3. Dahlias: Mrs G. Murray 1, Mrs W. Murray 2. Mrs Dunning 3. Zinnias: Mrs W. Murray 1, Mrs G. Murray 2, Mrs Dunning 3. Slipper: Mrs F. Mayo. Jam Tarts: Mrs Mackrell 1, Mrs Peck 2, Mrs F. Mayo 3. The meeting was closed and was followed immediately by the annual meeting. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The annual report was read by the retiring president Mrs Armstrong. In moving the adoption of the report Mrs Armstrong said Otakiri had reason to be proud of a very successful year, and thanking the committee and members for their loyal support asked them to give their co-operation to their new president. Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Cristall (the retiring secretary) were presented with beautiful shoulder sprays by Mrs V. Peck. Competition winners for the year were:— General Competition: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Cristall 2, Mrs F. Mayo 3. Double Flower: Mrs Cristall. Single Flower: Mrs Cristall. Vegetable: Mrs Peck. The new committee comprised:— President, Mrs Peck; secretarytreasure!', Mrs Dunning; Mesdames D. G. Campbell, Carr, Mackrell, F. Mayo, W. Mayo, K. Pryor, Sandilands, Winters and Miss J. Murray. WAIMANA MEETING GARDENING CIRCLE The April meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute gardening circle was held last Wednesday at the president’s, Mrs Wylde’s home. There were several members present from the Taneatua gardening circle who were welcomed by Mrs Wylde. Mrs Wylde read a most interesting and rather humorous article on “Green Fly.” The growing of Dahlias from seed was discussed and has been proved quite successful if seed from good species was grown. Two competitions were won by Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Hamtpon and Mrs White and Mrs Bennett.,

The Taneatua visitors kindly acted as judges for the competitions and the following are their placings:—Best flower: Mrs C. Hampton 1, Mrs J. Mitchell 2, Mrs Wylde 3. Best Vegetable: Mrs King 1, Mrs S. Eagle 2, Mrs Hampton 3. Low bowl flowers arranged for effect: Mrs Wylde 1, Mrs Hampton 2, Mrs Cooper 3. After afternoon tea had been served, members had a walk around the garden which was very neat and ‘trim.

At the conclusion of the afternoon Mrs Butler on behalf of the visitors, thanked Mrs Wylde and the gardening circle for the pleasant time spent and extended an invitation to the Waimana members to visit Taneatua gardening circle in May, which was accepted.
