NEW INDUSTRY IN CANTERBURY 500 TONS A YEAR FROM LAKE ELLESMERE Eels from Lake Ellesmere are now being canned for export to Europe as part of New Zealand’s food contribution to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.

An Auckland firm, which has been canning pilchards at Picton, has a contract to supply unlimited quantities of canned eels to Unrra at a guaranteed price, and regular consignments of chilled eels are being forwarded by rail from Christchurch to Piction for canning. Lake Ellesmere’s eel population is said to be the densest in the world for enclosed waters, and a survey made by the Marine Department some years ago showed that it would be possible to take up to 500 tons of eels a year out of the lake during the migrating season.
