SHOULD BE FILLED
EMPTY HOUSES AND BACHES VIEWS OF R.S.A. EXECUTIVE There were 7036 ' unoccupied houses and 10,775 unoccupied baches in New Zealand, according to the 1946 census figures, stated a resolution adopted at a recent meeting of the Returned Services’ Associations’ Dominion Executive. The resolution advocated legislation requiring the owners to find tenants for those houses and baches within two months, in default, the Government to find tenants.
The resloutipn arose from a discussion during which instances were given of distressing conditions under which returned personnel were living. “Assuming that of the 17,000 vacant houses and baches only 4000 were found to be available on account of their locality and amenities, for permanent occupation,” said one speaker, “it would mean welcome and timely assistance to a corresponding number of returned servicemen and their families.”
It was appreciated by the committee that the question of maintenance and re-possession in certain circumstances would need to be provided for, on lines similar to those in the legislation of Tasmania.
