The Australian Journal

The principal feature of the April “Australian Journal” is the first instalment of a new three-part novel by Rett Rouget, former member of the A.I.F. and Middle East veteran. Rouget’s novel is not, however, a war story, but an exciting drama whose central figure is an cx-soldier endeavouring to establish himself in civilian life, while old companions from a pre-war criminal past try to drag him back to his former ways. Filled with action the story has the elusive quality of suspense, and should prove very popular. Other Australian authors represented are Rui Chestor, who writes of Central Australia; Catherine Shepherd, the Tasmanian girl whose plays are well-known to A.B.C. listeners; Blanche Maynard, with a pleasant romance about show-riders; Elizabeth Cornish, an ex-army nurse; Rex Grayson and S. H. Courtier. “The Australian Journal” has always fostered the Australian writer, a policy which has born fruit in Com-monwealth-wide favour.
