SCREEN NEWS

TELEVISION TO BE TRIED BRITISH EXPERIMENTS According to reliable reports big screen television is expected to be tried in England shortly, states the magazine “Filin Weekly.” When questioned on the subject of screen video by a trade paper Mr J. Arthur Rank expressed great optimism on the subject of television. He claimed that British experiments in colour television are equal to those in America. British pioneers in television, J. B. Baird and Co., have an agreement with a group of news theatres who own five London cinemas and two in the provinces. First public television showing is expected to be on an Bft x lift 6ins screen. Transmitting Rights Rank expects that the trade will receive transmitting rights from the 8.8. C. otherwise it cannot help the Corporation. He stated that his organisation was interested in televising for theatrical presentation only. Several Years Away Television would have an enormous effect on the film business but full scale studio to cinema television was, in his opinion, several years away. Rank’s organisation was experimenting with colour video and aimed mt the steady improvement of a large image. “I would like to emphasise that I very definitely do not think that research people in America are more advanced than we are on this subject,” he added. “My information is that we are certainly keeping abreast of developments everywhere.”
