IRRESPONSIBLE ACT

HEAVY BUS TYRE CUT WILFUL YOUNG MAORI When a heavy passenger vehicle belonging to Charles Te Kora was parked outside a hall at Ruatoki people standing near were startled by the sound of swiftly escaping air and one of the rear tyres settling down. The result was the discovery of a deep gash in the tyre obviously deliberately done, and the subsequent appearance of a Maori youth in the Whakatane Court last Wednesday, named Hooper Te Pari. Sergeant Farrell said that on March 14 last the vehicle with others was parked outside the hall and accused who had been acting in a suspicious manner was approached by Constable Thomasen. Though he at first denied the deed he later admitted it. The tyre was practically new and repairs (only temporary) had been done at a cost of £7 10/-. Constable Thomasen said it was difficult to find the motive behind the action of defendant. He had only passed Standard 1 at school, and on the night in question had quickly changed his clothes after cutting the tyre to escape detection. He declared he had no grudge against the owner of the vehicle. With the aid of a Maori interpreter, defendant said he pleaded guilty, elected summary trial and had nothing to say. Fined £lO, and ordered to pay compensation amounting to £5.
