Eight New State Houses Tenders will be called in the near future for the construction of a further eight State houses in the Borough of Whakatane. Donation to Band At the April meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board it was decided to make the Board’s usual annual donation of £2 2/-.to the Whakatane Citizens’ Band. Building Permit Granted Notification has been received by Whakatane Amusements Ltd., that after a wait of nearly seven years, the Building Controller has agreed to grant a permit authorising the rebuilding of the shop adjoining the Grand Theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 1940. Famine Emergency Campaign " Rationing coupons surrendered at the Post Office, Whakatane, for the period 7th to 12th April, 1947, were as under: Meat 12/-, tea nil, sugar nil, butter nil, fats lllbs. Total collections to date now are: Sugar 191bs, tea 14£lbs, butter 232£lbs, meat £2lB 12s Id Business Building Permits In'answer to the Borough Council’s protest regarding the absence of building permits in Whakatane for business premises, the Building Controller has replied to the effect that the reason was because all applications had been deferred or declined on the grounds of their nonessentiality in the public interest. Returned Servicemens’ Project

Twelve returned servicemen have shown great initiative in combining to form a company to operate a timber mill in the Minginui district. The new company is to be known as Long Fern Timber Co. A lengthy period of cutting is assured the company in a good class of bush. The mill is in the progress of being built and a quantity of machinery has already been landed on the site.

Harbour Board Vacancy At the April meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board it was announced that Mr H. W. Brabant had been appointed as the Borough Council’s representative on the Harbour Board to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, the late Mr G. A. Brabant. The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Brabant who in turn thanked him for his kind remarks and welcome.

Menace to Society ! A smile went round the Borough Council table last Monday evening when the Deputy Mayor (Cr S. S. Shapley) mentioned some trees in a certain part of the Borough which were overhanging the. footpath and were so low that they even knocked his hat off. “They are a definite menace to society,” he a'dded with a smile as he urged that action be taken for their removal.

Should Concentrate on Houses!

“I can’t see why the Housing De- , partment should worry about shops in its housing plans. I think if. should concentrate on houses and leave the building of shops to private individuals. There are enough shops now in Whakatane to serve all the needs of the community and if you are going to build for the small man you are going to have him frozen out.” Cr A. J. Canning at last Monday’s meeting of the Borough Council.

Harbour Board Representation

Writing the Harbour Board the Whakatane County Council attached a copy of its letter to the Under Secretary, Marine Department, Wellington, and a copy of the Marine Department’s reply dated sth February, relative to the Matata riding representation on the Tauranga Harbour Board. The Board decided that the Whakatane County Council be advised that if if was the wish of the Matata ratepayers to be included in the Whakatane Harbour District, it would support any such application. Board Members Status Referring to the re-appointment of Mr H. C. McCready to the Whakatane Hospital Board, the Department wrote yesterday intimating that if the Board was satisfied as to the legality of the'reinstatement of Mr McCready it was not intended to pursue the matter any further. It was to reply that the Board was prepared to accept the funding of the Counties’ Association, that the appointment was permissable and legal. uqg
