Penguins Like Goldfish
The four penguins acquired by the Newtown Zoo from the Byrd Expedition have adapted themselves quite well to their new environment. A visitor to the zoo found them perched contentedly on the edge of an ornamental pool, their flappers stretched out as if to dry, and a smug, well-fed expression on their "faces." They have every reason to look smug. Their diet at the Zoo is regular and generous and they don't have to dive into the cold waters of the southern seas to search for it. Three of them eat as much as a full-grown seal, according to the curator of the zoo, Mr C. J. Cutler, who says that their meals consist mainly of terakihi and blue cod—by the bucketful. When they first arrived they were released into the pool which once belonged to the black swan. , They were not left there long, for inside half an hour the pool's goldfish colpny had been reduced by half.
