WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly and annual meeting of the Waimana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute Gardening Circle was held at Mrs Grant Mitchell’s home last Wednesday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members and Mrs King presided. The minutes and report were read and adopted. The report revealed that the circle had had quite an active and interesting year. Mrs Wylde was elected for the coming year as president, and Mrs Roland White secretary. Interesting readings on Anemones and green manuring were given by Mrs Mitchell. Mrs Cooper also read an interesting article on daffodils. A competition, jumbled names of flowers, was won by Mrs King, and Mrs Hampton, Mrs Ducker and Mrs Priest were equal for second place. Mrs King then presented the points prizes won during the past year, Mrs J. Mitchell 1, Mrs Woolfield 2, Mrs Wylde 3. The detailed results were: Best flower, Mrs J. Mitchell 1; Mrs King and Mrs R. White 2; Mrs Wylde and Mrs S. Eagle 3. Best vegetable, Mrs S. Eagle 1; Mrs King 2. General competitions: Mrs Wylde 1; Mrs Woolfield 2; Mrs Cooper 3. The Challenge Cup for most points in vegetables, and donated by Mrs Wylde, was won by Mrs S. Eagle. The day’s competitions were judged by Mrs Priest and Mrs Stansbury, the results being as follows: Best flower, Mrs Hampton 1; Mrs J. Mitchell 2; Mrs King 3. Best vegetable, Mrs G. Mitchell 1; Mrs King 2- Mrs Cooper 3. Floral picture, Mrs Cooper 1; Mrs J. Mitchell 2. Cactus dahlia, Mrs J. Mitchell 1; Mrs Hampton 2; Mrs Ducker 3. During the afternoon, Mrs Mitchell on behalf of the members, presented the retiring secretary, Mrs Cooper, with a small gift and bouquet of lillies in appreciation of her work for the circle in the past. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Eagle and Mrs R. White and enjoyed by all. At the conclusion of the afternoon, Mrs King thanked Mrs Mitchell for the pleasant afternoon and the use of her home.
