SALARY APPORTIONMENT LOCAL BODIES CONFER In connection with the suggested apportionment of. the salaries of Health Inspectors which the Department has recently put forward, the Opotiki, and Whakatane County and Borough Councils held a special meeting of delegates in Whakatane last Monday for the purpose of discussing the suggested rates in local body contributions. Mr J. L. Burnett was voted to the chair and outlined the present standard of contribution and the suggested new basis. Delegates submitted the following population statistics:— European .Native Tl. Whakatane Borough 2533 271 2804 Whakatane County 5697 4612 10309 Opotiki Borough 1160 400 1560 Opotiki County 2300 2500 4800 11690 7783 19473 The following particulars on levies were also tabled:— Whakatane Borough: Present levy £55. Proposed new levy £ll6 16s 2d. Whakatane County: Present levy £IBO. Proposed new levy £3OO 13s 7d. Totals: Present levy £355. Opotiki Borough: Present levy £4O. Proposed new levy £65. Opotiki County: Present levy £BO. Proposed new levy £l4O.

Total £622 10s 3d. In connection with the total of £622 10s 3d as the proposed new levy it was pointed out in the meeting that the Department’s proposals would scale such down to 75 per cent, of £735, viz. £551 ss. Mr A. R. Knights, Health Inspector to the Local .Authorities above set out, at this stage attended the meeting, but was able to give the combined meeting little more information than was already at its disposal. It was finally decided on Mr W. A. Gault’s motion: “That this representative meeting of Opotiki and Whakatane Boroughs and Opotiki and Whakatane Counties, being the Local Authorities in Inspector Knights’ district, are unanimously of the opinion that 50 per cent, of such Health Inspector’s duties and travelling in this area are on account of the Local Authorities above mentioned and on this basis such Local Authorities consider the Health Inspector’s salary and expenses should be apportioned.”
