MARRIAGE OF GERMAN GIRLS
AMERICAN SOLDIERS FACE ACCOMODATION PROBLEM
An American soldier now can marry a German girl—but where or when he can live with her while in Germany may prove something of a problem.
He can take her to an Army rest centre for a one-week honeymoon, after which he can visit her during hi! off-duty hours. x
' But he cannot obtain a Govern-ment-requisitioned house for her and neither can he move in with her family. “Military policy forbids the billeting of personnel of the occupation forces with Germans,” European Headquarters of the United States Forces said in a question-and-an-swer summary on “fraulein” marriages.
“There is no objection,” it continued, “to a soldier visiting German dependents when authorised to be absent from duty or quarters.” The limitations are expected to affect only a brief span of the couples’ married lives, however, as marriages generally will be authorised only When the soldier is nearing the end of his tour of duty in Europe. ■ Concerning wedding trips, the summary said: “For the purpose of a honeymoon, a German dependent, when accompanied by a spouse, may visit a rest centre within occupied territory for a period not to exceed one week.”
During that time the German girl will be allowed full use of the centre’s facilities, the same as any other dependent.
