PERSONAL
The Prime Minister, Mr Peter Fraser, passed through Taneatua yesterday' on his way to Rotorua. In his capacity as Minister of Native Affairs he diverted his course in order to visit Ruatoki where with Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., he received several deputations from the Maoris working under the Native Scheme.
At the recent Auckland Flower Show, held 1 in the Town Hall, Mrs A. C. Martin, of Eastern Boundary Road, Whakatane, was successful in winning the Lady Bledisloe Challenge Cup for decorative work. Mrs Martin who also won several other awards, took her own flowers all the way from her homestead and on these alone won great commendation. Our warmest congratulations go to her on her splendid win.
Mr F. J. Burt who did not seek reelection for the Licensing Committee this year, has been a representative on the Rotorua and Tauxanga Committees- for 28 years. The late Mr George Brabant and he were elected when Whakatane was included in the Rotorua Electorate which extended as far as Kihikihi (Waipa) m the Waikato. • When Whakatane .was included in the Bay of Plenty, the western side of the Rangitaiki was merged into the Tauranga Electorate, extending and including Te Aroha. Mr Burt was elected a member of the Tauranga Licensing Committee and held the seat for 15 ypars. This last election the part from Otamarakau (eight miles Tauranga and side of Matata) and this western side of the Rangitaiki River was again drafted into the new Bay of Plenty Electorate.
