NO LACK OF CEMENT

TRANSPORT DIFFICULTIES ■ THE PROBLEM POSITION AT NELSON WORKS In spite of a restriction in output imposed some months ago because of lack of coal, the Golden Bay Cement Company’s works at iTarakohe are faced with a prospect of having to shut down as its storage bins are full and there is not sufficient transport to take the cement away, states, a Nelson contemporary of recent date. Problems of transport have been increasing over the past two or three years and the slower turnrounds of ships, a shortage of suitable shipping and a lack of adequate land transport have combined to hold back the output at the works.

For months past the company has not been able to reconcile shipments without put and the position at present is that almost every inch of space at the works is taken up with cement. Unless transport is available soon the manufacture of cement will have to cease till storage space is available. It is stated that through/ insufficient transport, lack of coal and periodical labour shortages the works have lost an output of 40,000 tons in the past two years or a little over. If transport could be made available there would be no need for the importation of cement, it was stated.
