Hundredth Birthday
Telegrams of congratulations from the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, and the Minister of Works, Mr Semple, and many others were read unaided by Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Smith when she celebrated her 100th birthday in Timaru recently. She is still hale and hearty and enjoyed a party arranged in her honour. Mrs Smith arrived in Timaru in the ship Duke of Edinburgh 71 years ago. Of a family of six she has only one surviving son. Her husband, the late Mr Thomas Smith, died many years ago.
Three Years At School Asked before Mr Justice Smith in Hamilton whether 12 inches made a foot, a witness in a case said he did not know. Further questioned by his Honor, the witness said that, although he was 27 years of age and had been brought up in Grey Lynn, he could not read or write. He had been to school for only three years, after which he was expelled because of his nerves. He had, however, been cured of his nervousness when he was 14 years of age.
