RACING NEWS & VIEWS

A Magnificent Jumper The Australian champion steeplechaser, Winterset, a member of A. Winder’s Te Rapa team, is likely to make his first public appearance under colours in New Zealand at the I Easter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. He is such a grand stayer and magnificent jumper that he will be a leading attraction at the fixture. A New Trainer G. Cameron, for some years licensee of the Ohaupo Hotel, has taken out a trainer’s license and secured accommodation at Takanini. W. J. Mudford will ride for the stable. A Promising Feature The chestnut colt, Aylesbury, who opened his winning account at Pukekohe, is by Defaulter—Lady Drake by Beau Pere—Duckling by Chief Ruler from the imported mare, Tame Duck. Pie is a fine big colt, I showing plenty of thoroughbred quality and is likely to make a name for himself next season. I Two of a Same Name Last week wide publicity was given to the demise of the jumper, Esperance Bay at the Auckland Show, the said horse having in 1941 won the Great Northern Hurdles. Ap--1 parently there were two of a name, for it has now been elicited that the I winning Esperance Bay is running out on the Oakleigh Estate, Blenheim and is still hale and hearty, I ready to gain further honours in the show ring for jumping exploits. A Bernborough Colt I Since the sale of the great Bernborough to America, many regrets have been voiced that none of his | stock were left to Australia to perpetuate his name. The fact has now been established that he has a two-year-old representative there, which has been named Mr Bernie. The reason he was not registered as a foal is that Bernborough was for a period a disqualified racehorse, and while he was “under the ban” the compiler of the Stud Book refused to take entries of any of his pro- on geny.
