Male Nurses It has been found that the service given by male nurses in the Christchurch Hospital has been very satisfactory. Several applications have been received for these positions and authority has been given for suitable appointments to be made to certain wards. Advice reveived from the Department of Health indicates that hospital boards may shortly have the opportunity of registering as training schools for male nurses. The North Canterbury Hospital Boads intends to apply.
Protection of Magpies The recent suggested removal of protection for the Australian magpie in New Zealand was supported by Wanganui farmers at a monthly meeting of the federation. It was stated that the bird was originally imported to combat the grass grub, but that use had been eclipsed by the widespread harm done by the bird. Several members gave instances of young poultry being attacked by magpies, which were increasing in numbers at an alarming rate. The bird was also reported to be destroying the native insect eaters. The meeting passed a resolution supporting the Dominion council’s move ,to remove the protection at present afforded the magpies.
