WHAKATANE SOCIETY MEETING LECTURE ON ‘PERFS’ The February meeting of the Whakatane Philatelic Society took place in the Borough Council Chambers last Tuesday evening, the president, Mr H. O. Garaway, in the chair. There was a good attendance of members and an informative and instructive evening was spent. The competition was presented by Mr R. Coates, and was won by Mr T. Cradock. Details were: (1) The dove is the symbol of peace. Guata mata features the quetzal. What does this bird symbolise? Answer: Love of liberty, the quetzal cannot live in captivity, neither can Guatamala.
(2) What stamp features the picture of Lord Nelsom Answer: Barbados.
(3) What stamp shows a picture of R.M.S. Monowai? Answer: Cook Islands. (4) What country issues stamps showing fish as currency: Answer: Newfoundland. (5) How many New Zealand stamps feature Mount Ruapehu? Answer: Three. (6) Name them? Answer: Penny 1898; 5d 1898; 4d 1890. (7) What New Zealand, stamp depicts arrival of canoe or tribe in this country? Answer: 1906. Exhibition. Halfpenny. (8) What country depicts Lot and Lot’s wife on its stamps? Answer: St. Helena.
(9) Name these mountains shown on New Zealand stamps? Answer: gd 1998 (Mount Cook); 2d 1898 (Pembroke Peak); 2id 1898 (Mount Earnshaw); 5/- 1898 (Mount Cook); ■gd Peace issue (Mounts Cook and Sefton).
(10) Name the building's on the Peace Stamps of New Zealand? Answer: Parliament Buildings; St. Paul’s Cathedral; Carillion Tower. (11) What New Zealand stamp shows a picture of Logan Park: Answer: Dunedin Exhibition. (12) Name the only New Zealand stamp in which Queen Victoria appears without a crown? Answer: l-gd Centennial. The lecture of the evening was supplied by the president who spoke on stamp perforation and supplied several interesting examples of imperforation, rouletting, slot-mach-ines, line perforation and comb perforations.
The evening closed with an enjoyable supper served by the ladies.
