SHACK WANTED
HOME FOR PENSIONER APPEAL BY MAYOR \ The victim of the fire which destroyed the small bach on the harbour island last Monday evening was an old identity of the town, Mr J. McEwan, who lost all his possessions and is now without a home of any sort:
Mr McEwan has resided continuously in the town for over forty years and considerable sympathy is felt for him in his predicament. By way of assisting him, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, has launched an appeal for a suitable bach either by donation or purchase from any person possessing such building.
In the event of the shack being purchased, Mr Barry will open a public subscription list, for the purpose of buying it and erecting it on the site of the original building. It is hoped that voluntary labour will figure largely in the appeal and that Whakatane residents ’ will rally to the assistance of a resident in distress.
